MMI assisted a homeowner who recently purchased property with a 3-acre pond and 50 koi fish. The fish were dying and the homeowner asked MMI to asses the situation and see if we could help them. MMI suggested many things the homeowner could do, including installing wildlife cameras, adding aquatic plants and predator deterrents, installing water level gauges and cleaning up the old creosote timbers. MMI also strongly recommended reinstituting partial stream flow to the pond from the adjacent tributary. Originally this stream added some flows to the pond but over time the channel and drainage structures failed and were starving the pond which was stagnating. MMI designed a new spillway and secondary spillway and installed both allowing primary stream flow back into the pond while not drying out the existing tributary. MMI also installed outlet pipe covers that will ensure a consistent pond water level. These tasks have significantly improved the pond’s water quality and clarity. The koi are happy.
