MMI was approached by a homeowner in the Waxhaw area of greater Charlotte in early 2025. They had received a Notice of Violation from the NCDEQ-DWR for unauthorized work in a perennial tributary flowing through the property. The unauthorized work involved placing boulders along the stream banks and some cases boulders were placed in the thalwag of the channel which is typically not allowed. MMI designed a stream repair plan that was quickly approved by the DEQ and we assisted the homeowner with implementing the stream repairs. The homeowner employed a third- party contractor to assist with much of the rock work. This crew was able to move Volkswagen-sized boulders out of the stream channel using logs as leverage. MMI installed willow and dogwood live stakes along the stream banks. The final result was a new stable stream with nice rock work in compliance with the Clean Water Act. Both the agencies and the homeowner are pleased with the results.
